In the
last 5 seasons Toronto Maple Leafs continuously shuffled through the rosters to
stay competitive in their division.
Eastern
conference is packet with powerful teams, namely Montreal Canadians, Boston
Bruins, Pittsburg and Washington capitals.
Boston Bruins the closest rivals battling with Blues series tide 2-2 to
bring the Stanley cap back to Boston for the second time. This season Leafs had
made big moves and maxed out their salary cap to acquire talents to gain a
competitive edge over their rivalries, but fell short of their goal at least
for this season.
It was a
gamble spending millions signing young inexperienced players.
5 players combined
makes up 50 percent of the team’s salary cap. Big names like Mike Babcock, Mitch
Marner, Matthews and Kadri were suppose to give the team the best chance to win
the cup, but did not live up to the expectations.
Can we say
Leafs are at rebuilding stage at this point? It’s hard to say after spending
millions to sign those young superstars and not even advancing to the third
round in playoffs.
This young
team has a bright future in my opinion and a very good chance to win a Stanley
cap under a very well known head coach Mike Babcock.
The
question remains, what is it that Toronto Maple Leafs has to do to advance further
towards the Stanley cap? Few major changes I believe they should allow to
happen.
1. Leave
an opening spots for other talents to come in and try out for the team.
2. Trade
some high salary players to make some room in salary cap.
3. Resign
free agents to a shorter term as oppose to long term.
4. Acquire
a back up goalie to ease some of the stress from number one goalie
5.
Establish a zero margin of error policy for the players and Coaches.
6. Allow
criticism from the fans, a great way to allow the public be involved.
I truly
believe Toronto has a great chance to win the cup with this roaster. Those
young players should reflect on this season as the learning curve and put it
behind them.
For many
years now the fans have been patiently waiting and still believe that this
Toronto Maple Leafs team can be the champions one day. Looking forward to the
next season. Go Leafs GO!!
